Minnesota Jiu Jitsu

School Philosophies

1.) American School of Martial Arts trains for self defense first, Mixed Martial Arts second, and Jiu-Jitsu tournaments 29th. The problem with tournaments is that when you train for tournaments only, you water down a very effective self defense system, practicing things you could never do in a real fight. Today's MMA is watered down also, but it's a lot more realistic than BJJ competitions. I know plenty of high level grapplers who lose their composure when you start throwing punches.

2.) The reality of a fight should be:
-Keep it on your feet as long as possible. You can escape faster if you don't have to get up.
-If it goes to the ground, you take it there, and work the top position.
-If you end up on your back, reverse or submit, or get up immediately. Don't stay in guard unless you have over 10 years of guard practice, and even then, you are risking a beating.

3.) No ego. This is listed last, but should be first. If you come in and spaz out cranking and ripping everyone, you won't be allowed to grapple. You can't train if you are injured. If you submit everyone, no prize, trophy or monetary compensation shall be awarded. I would rather see people relaxing, grappling for the full time, and trying Gracie Jiu-Jitsu technique and learning instead of being a spaz for five minutes, gassing out, and going home with their imaginary trophy.
