Why Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Is So Effective
Teaching Thai Boxing and Boxing as well as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, I have noticed something I find interesting. During the striking class, not many people ask questions, but rather wait to be corrected. During the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu class, I am bombarded with questions of every sort. About half of these questions are good questions and the other half are "what if's?" What if I hold him here? What if his buddy kicks me in the head? What if he comes at me with a shovel? These are all questions that are never asked in Thai Boxing class. I'm kind of thinking that Americans have an ingrained favoritism towards the striking arts. Probably because of the movies we see, America's glorification of boxing, or because of what we've been told. That leads us to question the effectiveness of the grappling arts. Actually, the questions we ask during Jiu Jitsu are what make it superior. If you don't have a lock, or sweep, or basic movement down, the fact that you are working with a partner makes you feel that you need to adjust, and that makes you question what you are doing. When you start sparring Thai Boxing, that is when the questions come in and it's a fact that some people never spar. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very effective for the simple fact that you are actually controlling your opponent, taking away his space, instead of giving him room to move. Also, when you apply a submission hold, you are basically using your whole body against one small part of his body (arm, leg, neck, etc.) If I use my whole being against just one arm, how can that arm win? You have to know Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in order to defend that. GJJ adjusts you right away and that is good. You can also grapple close to full blast every day against a resisting person without injury, therefore progressing your self defense skills rapidly. You cannot spar all out in striking, except a few times a month, without getting broken down and battered with headaches. You therefore progress slower in developing striking for self defense. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu also works better for the smaller, weaker individual, so my arguement for the superiority of Gracie Jiu Jitsu for self defense has strong aspects of common sense.
